IAS stands for Indian Administrative Service. It is one of the most prestigious and important services in India. IAS officers hold key positions in the government, both at the central and state levels. They are responsible for implementing government policies, managing the administration of districts or ministries, and overseeing various government projects and schemes. Their roles involve decision-making, policy formulation, and ensuring that laws and regulations are effectively carried out.
Qualification/Who can Apply:
Bachelor’s degree from any recognized university or institution. There is no specific stream requirement (you can be from arts, science, or commerce background).
Age Limit:
General category: 21 to 32 years.
OBC (Other Backward Classes): 21 to 35 years.
SC/ST (Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes): 21 to 37 years.
Age relaxation is provided for other categories as per government rules.
Nationality:
Must be a citizen of India.
A subject of Nepal, Bhutan, or a Tibetan refugee who came to India before 1962 is also eligible.
Number of Attempts:
General category: 6 attempts.
OBC: 9 attempts.
SC/ST: No limit on attempts until the age limit is reached.
Physical Fitness:
Candidates must meet the physical standards as prescribed by the UPSC (Union Public Service Commission) for the Civil Services Exam.
Once the eligibility criteria are met, you can appear for the UPSC Civil Services Examination which is held annually in three stages:
Preliminary Exam (Objective type questions)
Mains Exam (Descriptive type)
Interview (Personality test)
